THE IMPORTANCE OF WATER QUALITY

Water quality plays a huge role in your aquariums success and fish's health. Understanding the type of water you have, and how to condition it will ensure the longevity and success of your aquatic ecosystem.

Municipal Tap Water

If you live within city limits and use the water from your tap, chances are that it is high in chlorine and/or ammonia. These chemicals need to be removed from the water before you can use it for your fish tank. Municipal tap water also has a tendency to fluctuate in pH which means you also need to watch and test your tank's pH. Using a product like Seachem's Safe will remove the chlorine and ammonia from your water as well as nitrates.

Well Water

Well water is the opposite of tap water, and is actually lacking chlorine but typically is high in other minerals, including dissolved nitrates if you live in an agricultural area. Adding additional nitrate to your tank to the natural nitrogen cycle in your tank can cause nitrate toxicity to your fish. Levels over 1000ppm become toxic and harmful to your tank. Nitrate levels in your tank should be below 50 ppm. The best way to monitor the nitrate level in your tank is with a water testing kit.

A big concern with using well water is the pH and hardness levels. Depending on the fish you are keeping, they will prefer water with different pH and hardness levels.

The best way to know if your water is right for your fish is to test the water. Using a kit such as the API water test kit will help you to find your water's levels so you can adjust them accordingly for your fish.

It is important to make sure that you have tested and treated your water accordingly before you bring new fish home, especially if you are bringing fish that have been living in city water to well water. Testing and treating your water will ensure that your tank continues to thrive.
